Avatar/The Last Airbender?

August 20, 2009

Alright folks, there’s confusion afoot, and I’d like to do my part to stop it, because I don’t want to spend the next four months hearing this shit if I can help it.

This morning, the teaser trailer to the James Cameron film Avatar was released on the Apple site.

The James Cameron film has nothing to do with the Nickelodeon animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender. A movie adaptation of that property is separately in the works, directed by M. Night Shyamalan.

To avoid confusion, the film version of Avatar: The Last Airbender has dropped the confounding word from its title, making its complete title just The Last Airbender.

Somehow, this appears to have simply made things more confusing.

So. To summarize:

James Cameron’s Avatar = original sci-fi story which, if the 25 minutes I saw at Comic Con are any indication, is going to fucking rule.

M. Night Shyamalan’s The Last Airbender = martial arts fantasy based on the Nickelodeon series which, if MNS’s career trajectory is any indication, is tragically likely to fucking blow.

So please. If you hear someone going “Cameron? I thought Shyamalan was doing Avatar!” spread the word. And then smack them if they keep doing it.
